Publication Highlight: recent research indicates the physiological basis of clove essential oil selectivity mechanisms

articlePh.D. student Pedro Toledo and former post doc Luis Viteri Jumbo, published article trying to disentangle the ecotoxicological selectivity of clove essential oil against aphids and non-target ladybeetles. Even though, plant-based biopesticides have been proposed as safer insect pest control tools, such assumptions are generally made without considering the absence of detrimental effects on sublethally-exposed non-target organisms or showing the physiological basis for the selective action of these botanical products. Hence, Toledo & Viteri Jumbo et al., used in vivo and in silico toxicological bioassays to provide knowledge regarding the mechanisms and safety of biopesticides.

The manuscript was published in the Journal Science of the Total Environment and was a result of the efforts of our former members, Sarah Miranda and Khalid Haddi, as well as our collaborators, Bruno Andrade (UESB), Raimundo Wagner (UFT) and Guy Smagghe (Ghent University).
